Why senators make so much about Private jet and Executive Compensation? Sometimes it will be costlier to make the Executive Officers to travel cheap!. Why not pose the same question to the UAW? $150-$200 per hour is not road travel, isn't it?|||Its surprising as to how your question appears in a section meant for Indian questions only.
Coming to the point, US Senators like their political brethren across the world, will make sounds that reap rich political dividends, though much of that make little sense. They are cushioned against adverse economic impacts anyway and can make grandiose, sweeping statements to make headlines.
But, it is worthwhile to remember that the US economy like the economies in the rest of the world is in the throes of a depression, unseen for a long time. It is the responsibility of every responsible citizen to rise to the occasion and help the national economy return to health.
The US Government's effort to bail out major mega corporations from sinking is laudable. The corporate heads should show an equal measure of understanding of the situation and a resolve to fight the crisis. Coming to attend a bail out hearing in private jets and incurring exorbitant travel expenses, thereby burdening the corporation with steep avoidable expenses, is obscene at the hour. The picture such acts of irresponsibility send out, is that such C.E.Os are insular creatures with no responsibility whatever towards national well being. I understand that psychologically the average US citizen would be loath to see their taxes being spent on the creature comforts of a few.
And those who make road travels to hog headlines and force the government to shell out 150 - 200 US$/hour are no less culprits. Obviously, in the US democracy all are equal and some are more equal than the others.
