I just went to purchase airplane tickets on a big travel seach engine and discovered by accident that the price of tickets for two adults is much less than for an adult and child traveling together. I called the company and they stated this is done all the time. How can this not be considered discriminatory?|||Probably not, as businesses have the right to charge what they wish. However you can try another wholesaler online. Go first to www.bookingbuddy.com and from there choose options, Cheap Tickets, CheapOair, Cheap Air or Cone. In my experience these have the best fares. Compare.
Good luck !|||Well, first of all a "travel search engine" doesn't charge you at all. They just report available fares.
I would be wildly surprised if any airline were actually charging more for an accompanied minor than for an adult (or, on domestic flights, any less.) What I suspect you discovered was a change in fare availability between inquiries. Is it repeatable? I'd wager not.
The "done all the time" was probably in response to a misunderstanding. Consider the fact that you probably do not share a native language with the person you were talking to and it is in fact normal to charge extra for UNaccompanied minors.
By the way, not everything "discriminatory" is illegal, immoral, or even a bad idea.|||Try a different search engine or airline website. I travel often with my daughter and NEVER have had to pay more for her ticket than mine or paid more for her to travel with me. Almost all US domestic airlines charge the same price for children over two years old the same price as an adult, and I've never had to pay extra for my daughter, nor have I seen a higher price when booking for myself and her. Many international airlines still have discounts of at least 10% for children under 12 and some have discounts for older kids too.
Try a different travel or airline website, the one you tried isn't the norm. Try Kayak, I've always had good luck using them and they refer you to the airline or other travel site when you decide to make the purchase.
http://www.kayak.com/flights|||Child fares are the same as adult fares.
I recommend not buying from a search engine. But sites like
The Airlines: United, US Airways, Delta, Continental, American, AirTran, Southwest, Frontier
3rd party: Orbitz, Expedia, Kayak, Travelocity, Priceline|||No,it's age-wise not like they are charging more or less for your race or sex. If you don't like it then don't fly with them. Easy.
